09.30 – 11.30 | Session 1: Pathways to air pollution action in a regional context
This session aims to map the key steps and building blocks for establishing regional cooperation on air pollution and what kind of cooperation may be most useful in different regions. Using the UNECE air convention as an example, a panel will discuss the milestones, difficulties, dos and don’ts of regional cooperation and similarities and differences with initiatives in other regions will be mapped out. The discussion will also touch on the question of finding the right governance level in different regions/ countries. This session aims to present and discuss possible ‘easy-win’ measures and actions which countries could implement to improve air quality, even if monitoring or measuring emissions is not possible. The Panel will also discuss the synergies and co-benefits of implementing measures to also mitigate climate change and achieve net zero aims. The Panel will further present and consider the relevant ‘trade-offs’ of implementing such measures, taking into account national considerations and levels of economic development.
